It covers basic modeling, character bipeds, and odds and ends. A complete disgrace to the Autodesk name. Got into the first real exercise and was continually frustrated by the output produced by the steps in the book not matching what was pictured.
Opened the project files from the website to find that the coordinates of the two planes you're supposed to produce were swapped in the book. Completely inexcusable, and the publisher has never issued any errata to correct this glaring issue that occurs only 22 pages into the book.
Considering it's been 3 years and I'm not the only one that's had this issue, the lack of an errata statement from Sybex is disgraceful.
I can't trust this as a reference tool, so I'm sending it back. If you're looking for a perfect example of how low the standards are to become an Autodesk Certified Instructor, this book is for you. When reading over the contents of this book, I was excited and motivated to learn 3ds. Starting in the 2nd chapter of of this book as a beginner I was having issues with the xyz coordinates. I was told to type in specific numbers in each and every time I did my y and z coordinates would be off.
No matter what I did I could not line my "images" up like the book shows, by just using the keyboard inputs. A page later I had issues with the polygon modeling. The book shows an entire face selected to lengthen a cylinder. My cylinder was full of so many polygons I couldn't select the whole face. I'm a beginner and perhaps these issues are trivial to resolve but after several hours of redoing the first couple pages over and over I've decided to leave this book behind for the time being.
